What is the NDIS?
The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, is a program in Australia that provides funding for people with disabilities. It provides support and services to make their lives better and more independent.
Under the NDIS, people with disabilities receive individualised support based on their unique needs and goals. The scheme provides funding for a range of services and supports, including but not limited to:
- Therapies
- Access to assistive technology and equipment
- Support workers helping with personal care and daily activities
- Home and vehicle modifications to make life easier
- Support to help gain employment
- Help in accessing social activities
To access the NDIS, individuals need to meet certain eligibility criteria. This includes having a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to participate in activities and requiring support from the scheme for an extended period.
The NDIS aims to empower people with disabilities by giving them more choice and control over the supports they receive. It focuses on early intervention (getting supports early), enabling individuals to access services and supports that can help improve their outcomes and quality of life.
Who is Eligible to the NDIS?
To be eligible for NDIS funding in Australia, individuals must meet certain criteria. Here is a general overview of the eligibility requirements:
- Age: The NDIS is available for individuals who are under 65 years of age. If you're over 65, other aged care and support services may be more suitable.
- Residency: You must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
- Disability: You need to have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to participate in everyday activities. The disability should be likely to be with you for your entire life.
- Functional Impairment: The disability must result in a substantial reduction in your ability to perform daily tasks or activities without help. - Early Intervention: If you have a child under the age of 7 with a developmental delay or disability, they may be eligible for early intervention supports under the NDIS. - Local Area Coordination (LAC) or Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) Access: Depending on the area you reside in, you may need to contact your local LAC or ECEI partner to access the NDIS. They will assess your eligibility and guide you through the process.
It's important to note that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee automatic access to the NDIS. Each application is individually assessed, and it's recommended to provide supporting documentation and evidence of your disability.
