How can an NDIS Physiotherapist help?

Physiotherapy helps people living with disability improve and maintain their physical abilities, manage movement difficulties and become more independent.

An NDIS physiotherapist can assess your movement, strength, balance and mobility, then develop a personalised therapy program based on your needs and goals.

Physiotherapy can support you with:

  • Improving walking, mobility and movement
  • Building muscle strength and physical endurance
  • Improving balance and coordination to reduce the risk of falls
  • Managing muscle stiffness, tightness and disability-related pain
  • Improving posture, flexibility and joint movement
  • Practising everyday movements such as standing, walking and transferring between a bed and chair
  • Developing exercise programs to maintain physical abilities
  • Learning to use mobility aids safely
  • Building confidence to participate in community and recreational activities

Physiotherapy is available for children and adults with a wide range of physical and neurological disabilities. Your physiotherapist will tailor your therapy to your abilities, support needs and NDIS goals.

How physiotherapy works

NDIS physiotherapy focuses on helping people with disability improve their physical function, maintain mobility and participate more independently in everyday activities.

Your physiotherapist will usually start with an assessment to understand your movement, physical abilities and goals. They can then recommend a personalised treatment and exercise program.

Some common types of NDIS physiotherapy include:

  • Neurological Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for people with conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord or nervous system, including stroke, acquired brain injury, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy.
  • Mobility and Walking Training
Exercises and practical strategies to improve walking, movement and mobility, including using walking aids where appropriate.
  • Strength and Balance Training
Personalised exercises to build strength, improve stability and reduce the risk of falls.
  • Muscle Stiffness and Pain Management
Treatment and movement strategies to help manage disability-related pain, muscle tightness and restricted movement.
  • Paediatric Physiotherapy
Support for children with disabilities to develop movement skills, coordination, strength and physical confidence.
  • Transfers and Positioning
Support to improve sitting, standing and moving safely between beds, chairs and wheelchairs.
  • Mobility Equipment Assessments
Assessments and recommendations for suitable mobility aids, such as walkers and other equipment, where appropriate.
  • Home Exercise Programs
Exercises and activities that can be practised between sessions to help maintain progress and support long-term goals.
  • NDIS Assessments and Reports
Physiotherapy assessments, progress reports and supporting documentation to help identify disability-related therapy needs and inform NDIS planning.

Depending on your needs, physiotherapy may take place at a clinic, at home or in the community.

Finding it difficult to travel to physiotherapy appointments? A mobile NDIS physiotherapist can provide therapy in your home, supported accommodation or community setting.

Mobile physiotherapy can be particularly helpful for people who have reduced mobility, fatigue, difficulty accessing transport or need support in their everyday environment.

An NDIS physiotherapist offering home visits can help with:

  • Walking, balance and mobility exercises at home
  • Strengthening and movement programs
  • Practising safe transfers between beds, chairs and wheelchairs
  • Improving confidence with stairs and moving around the home
  • Assessing mobility challenges in everyday environments
  • Developing home exercise programs
