This story has been shared from the Council For Intellectual Disabilities MyChoiceMatters project.
Hello, my name is Omar and the most important thing in life is to live for every second of every day. I have an acquired brain injury. I was run over by a drunk driver when I was 22 years old.
I am from South Africa originally. I am living in Australia for 15 years now. I came to Australia in a wheelchair. It all comes down to your mental capacity and your determination. Saying my experience about my accident is very important for me. You know they say everything happens for a reason. I really think this is my purpose (being an ambassador for RYDA).
If I can relate and change one person in a whole group of 50 kids then I have achieved my goal you know.
I got involved in acting 7 years ago. Acting and drama gives me motivation and the power so to say of letting the audience see what I allow them to see. My speech went downhill when I did not do drama for six months.
Just give people with a disability a chance to also prove what they can do.
We only get one life so live your life now, while the lights are still on.
The Personal Stories Project shares short 3 minute videos of different people with an intellectual disability talking about how they are living a good life. Omar is one of the people to share his story.
RYDA is a series of practical and powerful workshops for high school students that challenge students to change the way they think about road safety and lay the foundation for safe road use throughout their lives.
