How to manage your NDIS plan

Let's compare Self Managed vs Plan Managed vs Agency Managed

When you receive a new NDIS plan, the NDIS asks you HOW you want to manage your plan?

What they actually mean is WHO is going to be paying your bills!

There are 3 ways your NDIS plan funding can be managed.

Agency or NDIA managed

  • The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) pays your invoices on you behalf.
  • You don't need to pay invoices and you keep no records.
  • You must be confident with budgeting and NDIS spending rules - the NDIS is not going to educate you on this.
  • You can only use registered NDIS providers. You don’t receive help with spending and budgeting.

Plan Managed

  • A registered plan manager pays your bills and keeps your records on your behalf.
  • You get help with budgeting and spending rules.
  • Is a stated support (funding) in your plan if you choose to be plan managed - this means this money can only be spent on a Plan Manager.
  • Anyone can be plan managed.
  • You can use both registered and unregistered NDIS providers.
Self Managed

  • You (or your nominee) pay all the invoices yourself.
  • You can claim first and b the providers OR pay the provider from your own pocket and claim the money back from the NDIS
  • You must keep records - this is important as you can be audited later.
  • You must be confident with budgeting and NDIS spending rules - The NDIA can change you to Agency Managed if they think you are mis-spending (true story).
  • You can use both registered and unregistered NDIS providers.

WHEN do I choose how I want to manage my NDIS plan?

Your NDIS Access Meeting
The first opportunity you have to tell the NDIS how you want to manage your NDIS plan is during your NDIS Access Meeting. Your LAC will record this info in your record.

Your NDIS Plan Meeting
Your Plan Meeting is where the Planner will ask/confirm how you want to manage your plan

You will need to provide him with details of the Plan Mananger you want to use, so do your research before the meeting!

Can I change how I mange my NDIS Plan?

Yes you can. You can request to change at any time!

The most popular change is from self-managed to plan-managed or from agency-managed to plan-managed.
