About

Promoting better support for siblings of children and adults with disability

Siblings Australia is committed to improving the support available for siblings of children and adults with chronic conditions including disability, chronic illness and mental health issues.

Provide parent information sessions (via skype/phone if not in Adelaide), tailored to individual needs, to assist parents in supporting siblings of a child/adult with disability. Assists in strengthing family relationships.

Support for Parents

Disability impacts the whole family, and that this includes siblings.

We also recognise that siblings of children with disability are likely to have a mix of feelings and experiences, but may not always have the understanding and emotional skills to manage the complexities. Support can make all the difference.

If you are able to communicate as a family and support each other, you will be more able to manage the challenges together. We understand you are juggling a lot of responsibilities and there is probably much you are already doing to support siblings. It is hoped that the information, services and resources in this section will give you some new ideas.

Support for Siblings

We understand that sibling relationships are often the longest within a family so we believe useful information and support at different stages of the sibling journey allows them to reach their own potential and be more likely to contribute to a good life for their brother or sister with disability.

Kate was a great help to our family, as we have twins and only one has a disability.  It’s so important that we deal wisely with both children, yet the needs of the sibling are so often overlooked.  Kate’s wisdom is invaluable.
