What is an NDIS check‑in? | MyCareSpace

What is an NDIS check‑in?

A check‑in is a short conversation (by phone or face‑to‑face) between you or your nominee and your “my NDIS” contact, which could be your Local Area Coordinator, Early Childhood Partner, or NDIA planner. You are welcome to invite a relative, friend, advocate or other support person. (improvements.ndis.gov.au)

Why it happens

The NDIA uses these calls to confirm your plan is on track, to fix problems early and to help you make the most of your funding. A check‑in is also your chance to ask questions. Having one does not automatically change your plan. (improvements.ndis.gov.au)

When you might be called

  •  About two months before the reassessment date printed on your plan

  • Ahead of major life events such as finishing school, moving, or starting work

  • If your plan is complex or you are on your first plan

  • Any time you request a check‑in yourself

  • After you contact the NDIA and they need more details about your enqury

  • When a safety issue arises, a severe weather event in your area

What will you be asked in your check in meeting?

  • how you’re going

  • if you have any questions about your current plan

  • how you’re going with your goals

  • if you have any new goals, or want to change your goals

  • how you’re using local services in the community or other government services

  • how you’re using the NDIS supports in your plan

  • how your supports are helping you pursue your goals

  • if your supports meet your disability needs

  • if your situation has changed

  • if you need help with big changes coming up in your life, like starting or finishing school or starting a new job.

What to take with you

  • Recent therapy reports, assessments or specialist letters
  • Support coordinator summaries and end‑of‑plan reports
  • Written answers to the topics above so nothing is forgotten
  • Quotes or invoices for any new supports you plan to request

Possible outcomes

  • No change to your plan
  • Extra help to put your plan into action, such as more frequent check‑ins or funding for a support coordinator
  • Budget adjustments if you need more, fewer or different supports
  • An eligibility review if early‑intervention goals have been met and ongoing NDIS supports are not required

Extra preparation tips from experienced participants and advocates

Walk into every check‑in prepared: evidence in hand, goals clarified, and the right support people beside you. Good preparation keeps you in control of the conversation and protects the funding that helps you live the life you choose.

Tip Why it matters
Treat every check‑in like a mini plan review have evidence ready. Some people have had unexpected funding cuts after a “casual chat.”
Confirm at the start of the call that it is a check‑in If unprepared, ask to reschedule. You are entitled to delay until a support person can join.
Ask for a reference number for every NDIA phone call Creates a clear record if decisions need to be appealed.
Request SMS or email notice before any phone check‑in. Gives you time to gather paperwork and arrange support people.
Start collecting provider reports six months before your plan ends.  Therapists often need lead time to write detailed progress notes.
Check your communication preferences and accessibility needs are correct in the my NDIS portal.  Ensures interpreters or relay services are arranged if required.

If you have not heard from the NDIA within six weeks of your plan’s 12‑month mark, phone 1800 800 110.

Following up prevents a last‑minute rush.
